Winter Traditions at Ellisland Farm

4-7pm, Saturday 26 January 2019

An evening exploring seasonal traditions to drive out the cold winter.  Meet the Black Knight, Balhector and Beelzebub as part of the local Galoshins play, bless the orchard for a rich crop of apples in 2019 and discover what Burns had to say about the end of one year and the beginning of the next.  With food, music, stories and good company.

Galoshins:  A traditional mumming play performed in Dumfries and Galloway at Halloween or at New Year.  Boys from the local school, carrying turnip lanterns, would have visited people's houses collecting money, fruit or sweets in return for a performance.

Apple Wassail:  Robert Burns' orchard at Ellisland is still thriving.  To secure a good crop for the coming year, we will hang toast in the trees, pour cider on the roots and sing the wassailing song.

Tickets are available online from or directly from The Midsteeple Box Office 01387 253383
