A' The Airts Sanquhar

Festival of Folklore

In the Tracks of Old Mortality

 A' The Airts, Sanquhar, DG4 6BL

 Sat 28th September 2019

Thornhill-based writer and historian Iain Wilson will give a talk on the life and times of Robert Paterson - immortalised by Sir Walter Scott as 'Old Mortality'.

Based on his 2016 book, In the Tracks of Mortality, Iain's talk will explore the origins of the story of 'Old Mortality', who is popularly credited with erecting and repairing the gravestones of the Covenanters on his travels through Dumfriesshire and Galloway in the 18th century.

Optional depending on space: The talk will also examine the evidence on which Scott drew for the development of his character, and the life and times of Paterson, the real-life individual on whom the character was based.

The talk will be followed by a short visit to Sanquhar Churchyard

Iain will be on hand to sign books afterwards
