Swords in Stories: The Tale of a Sword, a Story and a Song

A' The Airts Community Art Centre, Sanquhar, DG4 6BL

 Sat 25th September 2021

Dr. Valentina Bold presents the epic tale of a sword, a story and a song. The song is 'The Ballad of Kinmont Willie' Armstrong, first printed in 1802 by Walter Scott. The story is of Armstrong's illegal capture on the border-line, and dramatic jailbreak from Carlisle Castle, in 1596. The sword is believed to have belonged to Armstrong, and was recently discovered in Annan Museum. Taken together, they illuminate the violent side of sixteenth century Scotland, and its afterlife in our national consciousness.

Dr Valentina Bold is an internationally recognised expert on Scottish cultural heritage, specialising in literature, songs and stories. She is Heritage Project Co ordinator with the Crichton Trust, Vice-Chair of Literature Alliance Scotland and previously spent many years as a senior academic. Her books include 'James Hogg: A Bard of Nature's Making'; 'Smeddum: A Lewis Grassic Gibbon Anthology' and 'Robert Burns's Merry Muses of Caledonia'.

Copies of Dr Bold's pamphlet, 'The Kinmont Willie Sword and other Tales of Mettle' will be available at the event; it was supported by the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, the Royal Society of Edinburgh and Dumfries Museum.
