5Rhythms with Gillian Galbraith
5Rhythms with Gillian Galbraith

Bowlers Hall, Castle Douglas, DG7 1DQ

Sat 1st June 2024 1.30pm - 4pm

On 1st June we have the chance to dance 5Rhythms.  This time with the wonderful Gillian Galbraith.

Some of you will remember Gillian from her classes in Dumfries a few years ago. She is travelling from Edinburgh to join us in Castle Douglas.

5Rhythms is a conscious dance practice developed by Gabrielle Roth to help liberate your inner dancer. There are no steps to learn and no right or wrong ways to move. The music can be eclectic, drawing on multiple genres and cultures to support a group process.

It can be many things at the same time - a fun workout, chat-free social time, or a deep spiritual practice. On any level it can be profoundly transformative, helping shift your mood, energy and perspective.

Often described as a moving meditation, 5Rhythms supports you to pause your thinking mind and connect with how you feel then allow your body to do the rest.

The rhythms are: flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical, and stillness.

George Hinchliffe's Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain
George Hinchliffe's Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britian

Easterbrook Hall, Bankend Rd, DG1 4ZE

Thu 6th June 2024 7.30pm

A celebrated musical juggernaut for four decades, thrilling audiences from Tasmania in the South Pacific to Svalbard in the Artic Circle, Windsor Castle to Carnegie Hall, the all-singing, all-plucking Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain continues to break the mould with a programme of new tunes as well as old classics.

A concert by the Ukulele Orchestra is an unforgettable experience. A witty, quirky, irreverent, joyful, foot-stomping obituary of rock & roll and melodious light entertainment, all played on the 'bonsai guitar'. Add to this a menagerie of voices, eccentric humour and a fusion of post-punk energy and a wonderful evening of entertainment is guaranteed.

There are no drums, pianos, backing tracks or banjos, no pitch shifters or electronic trickery. Only an astonishing revelation of the rich palette of orchestration afforded by ukuleles and singing (and a bit of whistling) This is an exciting shopping-trolley dash through different musical genres, from ABBA to ZZ top, Tchaikovsky to Nirvana, via Lady Gaga and maybe a spaghetti Western. So in demand, they find themselves perpetually on a "world tour with hand luggage only"

The Ukulele Orchestra are coming to Dumfries - Catch them whilst you can.

A Photographic Odyssey: Shackleton's Endurance Expedition Captured on Camera
A Photographic Odyssey: Shackleton's Endurance Expedition Captured on Camera

Easterbrook Hall, Dumfries, DG2 7AE

Tue 11th June 2024 11am

On Ernest Shackleton's third Antarctic expedition in 1914, his ship, the Endurance, was trapped and eventually crushed in the pack ice. After camping for five months on the ice, Shackleton's men rowed to the remote Elephant Island. From there, Shackleton sailed for help to South Georgia over 800 miles away. Over three months later he returned to rescue the crew of the Endurance.

Frank Hurley, one of the great photographers of the 20th century, was the expedition's official photographer. His photographs are a visual narrative of an epic journey which capture with great artistry new and amazing landscapes within which a remarkable human drama is played out. The aim of the lecture is to capture Hurley's achievements as a photographer of the Antarctic in the first flush of human contact when it was still essentially terra incognita.

Mark Cottle was born on the Isles of Scilly and educated at Truro School, Cornwall, and Birmingham University. His career has been spent in education and training at home and abroad. He has lectured at Exeter College on Medieval and Tudor history, St Mark's & St John's University College, Plymouth, and at Bath University on Anglo Saxon and medieval England.
